A Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a deputy commissioner rank officer will probe the alleged assault of a woman by Ashwajit Gaikwad, the son of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) MD Anilkumar Gaikwad, reports The Indian Express.
The woman was injured after her boyfriend, Ashwajit allegedly tried to mow her down with his SUV car in Thane city on December 11. The incident took place at around 4:30 AM near a hotel on Ghodbunder Road, where the 26-year-old woman had gone to meet Gaikwad.
The Kasarvadavli police filed a case, however, no arrests have been made. Police have registered an FIR under sections 279 (rash driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt), 504 (insulting someone intentionally to provoke them), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Thane police chief on Sunday said that the statements of witnesses are being recorded and a forensics probe was on.
Speaking to the media from the hospital, the 26-year-old woman, Priya, who is a beautician and a model by profession, said that she was in a relationship with Ashwajit, adding that she was not aware that he was married. When she confronted him, he had allegedly told her that he and his wife were separated.
Priya further said that Ashwajit had expressed his desire to marry her, but when she went to meet him, he was with his wife.
As the argument heated up, Ashwajit later allegedly assaulted her. As she went to get her bag from the car, Ashwajit, his friend Romil Patil and driver Sagar Shelke drove off, injuring her.
The matter took a political turn after Atul Londhe, who is the chief spokesperson of the Maharashtra Congress, alleged that Ashwqajit was not arrested because he was the son of a bureaucrat.
