Digitalisation in aviation sector: DigiYatra facility to expand to 25 more airports in India in 2024, says Jyotiraditya Scindia

Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today said that next year the DigiYatra facility will be expanding to 25 more airports across India. As of now, the facility is available at 13 airports for domestic passengers.

Scindia said that the facility will be introduced at 14 airports in the first phase, followed by another 11 airports in the second phase in 2024. With the facility’s introduction at the 25 airports, the total number of airports supporting DigiYatra to 38, he said at a briefing in New Delhi.

The DigiYatra is a biometric-based mobile application facility for which can be used by passengers to enter an airport and even inside it. It allows for a faster entry in comparison to the traditional check by a security officer. The facility was initially launched at three airports – New Delhi, Bengaluru and Varanasi – in December 2022.

It allows contactless, seamless movement of passengers at various checkpoints at airports based on Facial Recognition Technology (FRT).

The DigiYatra mobile app is available for both iOS and Android platforms.

Uttar Pradesh to get nine more airports

Earlier in the month, Scindia announced that nine additional airports will be established in Uttar Pradesh within the next two years. This expansion will elevate the total count of airports in the state to 18. Emphasizing the Modi government’s significant focus on the civil aviation sector, he highlighted the remarkable achievement of developing 75 airports in the last nine years. He highlighted that the figure stood in stark contrast to the establishment of 74 airports in the initial 65 years of independence.
