PM Modi inaugurates Surat International Airport’s New Integrated Terminal Building to elevate travel experience – Know about its design, features and more

Good news for air travelers! Surat International Airport unveiled its state-of-the-art New Terminal Building (NITB), representing a significant leap forward in both capacity and cultural aesthetics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the NITB on Sunday (December 17), signifying a substantial advancement in infrastructure. This milestone is expected to significantly elevate the overall travel experience for passengers.

Constructed at a cost of more than Rs 150 crore, the new terminal building is designed to accommodate 1200 domestic passengers and 600 international passengers during peak hours. Additionally, there is a provision for expanding the peak hour capacity to 3000 passengers, with the annual handling capacity poised to increase to 55 lakh passengers.

As the primary gateway to Surat City, the terminal building is a harmonious blend of modern functionality and local culture. The façade of the upgraded terminal is a nod to the traditional woodwork found in the old houses of the ‘Rander’ region of Surat City, enriching the passenger experience with a touch of local tradition.

Environmentally conscious infrastructure

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the New Terminal Building is also environmentally conscious and GRIHA IV compliant. Various sustainability features have been integrated, including a Double Insulated Roofing System, energy-saving Canopies, Low Heat Gain Double Glazing Units, Rain Water Harvesting, a water treatment plant, and a sewage treatment plant.

Additionally, recycled water is employed for landscaping, contributing to water conservation efforts. The installation of a solar power plant further emphasizes the commitment to eco-friendly practices, making the Surat International Airport a model for sustainable and responsible infrastructure development.

Centre clears plan to declare Surat airport as international airport

The Union Cabinet on Saturday granted approval to declare Surat Airport as an International Airport. This decision not only positions Surat as a gateway for international travelers but also promises to streamline export-import activities, particularly for the thriving diamond and textile industries.

The move is anticipated to unlock unprecedented economic potential, establishing Surat as a significant player in the global aviation landscape and ushering in a new era of prosperity for the region.

Surat’s rapid economic growth and industrial development underscore the importance of this decision, as it is expected to boost economic expansion, attract foreign investment, and strengthen diplomatic ties. With an anticipated increase in both passenger and cargo operations, the international status of Surat Airport is poised to play a pivotal role in catalyzing regional development.
