Government issues high-risk alert for Samsung users; these Galaxy devices prone to hacking

The Government of India has sent out an alert for Samsung users, warning them of a potentially “critical” security flaw that could allow hackers to target their devices and steal their data. The warning, issued by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, suggests the risk could be wide-spread ranging from an entry-level Samsung Galaxy M series phone to the top-shelf Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung tablets could be at risk, too.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Samsung products that could allow an attacker to bypass implemented security restrictions, access sensitive information, and execute arbitrary code on the targeted system,” CERT-In said in a note.

All Samsung users are advised to update their devices immediately with latest security patches (for system as well as installed apps and games) and as a precautionary measure, they should also be extra cautious when using them until the time Samsung comes out with the full fix which is coming in an update this month itself.

“Samsung Mobile is releasing a maintenance release for major flagship models as part of monthly Security Maintenance Release (SMR) process. This SMR package includes patches from Google and Samsung,” Samsung Security said.
