Srikant Nandigam, CEO of Vignan Online, shares his views on opportunities and challenges of the Indian education system with FE Education Online.
What is the best thing about today’s education system?
Research-based learning instils a sense of curiosity and the ability to gather and evaluate information, preparing students for the complexities of the real world. Conceptual learning empowers students to grasp core concepts, enabling them to apply knowledge creatively in real world scenarios. This approach goes beyond exam focused rote learning and equip learners with adaptable skills crucial for lifelong success. Together, these elements create a dynamic educational environment that equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate an ever-evolving global landscape.
What is the one thing you would like to change in the system?
The one change I would advocate for in the educational system is prioritising a well-rounded learning experience. This involves integrating tech-based learning methods to keep students updated with the digital age to ensure they are well informed for the future challenges. Additionally, infusing fun-based learning techniques can help knowledge retention by making education engaging and memorable.
It is equally essential to build an environment that respects all subjects equally. Hence, emphasising STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education is crucial in this regard as it is a part of a broader multi-disciplinary approach. This approach would encourage students to explore various subjects and hence evolve creativity and critical thinking in them. In doing so, we can prepare students not just for a technologically advanced future, but also for a balanced and adaptable mindset for a better life.
What is the role digital has played in the evolution of the education system?
Digital technology has played a pivotal role in reshaping the education system, primarily by promoting distance learning. The emergence of digital tools and platforms has accompanied flexible learning that has allowed students to study at their own convenience and pace. This flexibility is a game changer for working professionals that has enabled them to meet their career goals while maintaining their full-time jobs. Digital classrooms have become the new norm and have replaced traditional methods of notes taking with interactive online curriculum delivery.
Students now engage with course materials using laptops, tablets and other internet devices. In addition, digital technology has facilitated the creation of online libraries, breaking down physical space barriers and encouraging global collaboration among students, teachers, and researchers. This access to a wealth of resources empowers students to develop strong self-directed learning abilities. One of the most significant impacts of digital learning is its ability to address learning gaps. Through personalised learning tools and technology, students can receive tailored support improving their educational outcomes. Overall, the role of digital technology in education evolution will continue to transform the way we teach and learn.
What has been the disadvantage of digital in education?
The disadvantages of digital education in today’s context are complex. The prevalence of digital devices and online platforms can be a double-edged sword. While they offer access to a vast pool of information, they also introduce numerous distractions. Students often find themselves tempted by social media, gaming, or other non-educational content which can hamper their focus and productivity. In another aspect, digital education prioritises cognitive skills over physical ones.
While traditional learning environments encourage physical activities, teamwork and firsthand experiences which are essential for an all round education, digital education may outshine these crucial aspects, potentially leading to a deficiency in physical skills and interpersonal abilities. Additionally, the rapid dissemination of information on social media can spread misinformation promoting a culture of ignorance, prejudice and hate.
Besides this, the reduced physical one-on-one interaction in digital classrooms can severely impact the teacher-student relationship, making it difficult to address individual needs and necessary academic support. Health concerns such as deteriorating eyesight due to prolonged screen time, and the high risk of personal data theft and cyberbullying are other significant disadvantages of digital education.
Therefore, while digital tools have transformed education in many ways, it’s essential to maintain a balance to alleviate these disadvantages and maximise the benefits of the digital age in education
What is the career advice you would like to give to students?
My career advice for students focuses on the value of flexibility and a broad skill set. In today’s highly competitive job market, upskilling and reskilling are crucial. First of all, students need to consider courses that align with emerging trends and industries. Space science, astrophysics, computer science, programming, data science, and machine learning are excellent choices, especially with recent successes like Aditya L1 and Chandrayaan 3 kind of India’s ambitious space probes that have sparked increased interest and investment in these fields.
Also, India’s enhanced global reputation has been exemplified by the success of the recent G20 Summit that underscores the importance of considering careers in international relations and international finance. In an increasingly interconnected world, expertise in these fields not only broadens career prospects but also offers exciting opportunities with international organisations and governments. Students should also consider exploring career opportunities in multidisciplinary MBA programmes. These programmes equip students with a holistic understanding of business and other domains.
Combining business acumen with expertise in areas like technology, healthcare or finance can provide students a competitive edge. In short, students should focus on courses that offer both relevance and versatility in a rapidly evolving professional landscape.
