Jewar Airport construction is in full swing! Yogi ensures direct connectivity with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport – Here’s what UP govt planning

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday (December 19) directed the officials to establish direct connectivity between the forthcoming Noida International Airport and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The Noida airport, which is being constructed in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar district near Delhi, is slated to have direct connectivity through metro, high-speed rapid rail, and road networks, as per an official statement.

“Just a few years ago, the region grappled with high levels of crime, witnessing incidents of snatching and robbery in broad daylight,” the chief minister said.

“… today, the narrative has shifted and the area is gaining recognition primarily due to the upcoming international airport. A film city is proposed near the Jewar airport. This will be the most developed area of NCR in the next few years. Jewar airport is going to become a major hub for air cargo,” he added.

65 Lakh passengers expected at Noida airport

Adityanath highlighted the expected passenger growth of the Noida airport, estimating 65 lakh passengers in 2024-25, rising to seven crore passengers annually by 2042-43. He suggested that rapid rail and metro options could serve as more efficient modes of transportation for this connectivity.

“Ensuring the connectivity of Jewar airport with Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, is imperative. Rapid rail and metro can be better options for this. A proposal should be prepared after obtaining the necessary cooperation and advice from the Government of India, NCRTC. The state government will provide all necessary resources,” Adityanath said, according to the statement.

In the meeting, the chief minister proposed conducting a trial landing on the runway in February, in ordder to ensure then need to accelerate the processes related to runway construction, lighting, and other necessary elements is in mind of the officials.

The deadline to complete the first phase of Jewar International Airport is just over a year away, November 24, 2024. However, according to a report in the Indian Express, the work to build the security perimeter, the runway as well as developing a hotels’ hub and transit system is on at a feverish pace. Moreover, in a major development, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently granted the airport its unique three-letter international identification code — DXN.
