Haryana revises school curriculum, students to learn values from Bhagavad Gita and other revered saints

Haryana Revised Curriculum: The government schools in Haryana have now made reading value education curriculum compulsory. This step has been made mandatory for students above class 6. The recent updates mention that students will be given life lessons from Bhagavad Gita, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, APJ Abdul Kalam Azad, Buddha, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Sarojini Naidu and Eklavya.

Earlier, these value-addition subjects were an optional part of the curriculum and was easier for students to completely skip them. Now that it has been made mandatory, students can not skip or ignore them or the state education department. Students will be required to study the books and will need to study the updated material thoroughly to be prepared to respond to questions that carry ten marks in their exams.

Haryana Curriculum Revises as per NEP 2020, NCFSE

The Haryana government restructured its curriculum in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE). To achieve this, they established a seven-member committee led by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) director. This committee was tasked with revamping the value education component of the curriculum to align with the guidelines outlined in the NEP and NCFSE.

According to an official involved in creating the new books, the committee chose to incorporate teachings from the Bhagavadgita because of its ability to inspire and shape moral character. They believe that this sacred text can impart lessons on fearlessness, simplicity, discipline, etiquette, dedication, focus, hard work, respect for nature, and the principles of achieving success.

Additionally, the books for Class 9th and 10th will feature stories about notable figures such as Shivaji, Buddha, Sister Nivedita (an Irish teacher and follower of Swami Vivekananda), Ekalavya (a character from the Mahabharata), and Maitreyi (an Indian philosopher from the later Vedic period in ancient India, known as the wife of the Vedic sage Yajnavalkya as mentioned in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad). These stories aim to offer diverse insights and knowledge about these historical and philosophical figures from Indian history and literature.
