With the inauguration of the 16th Madhya Pradesh Assembly session on Monday, the opposition Congress alleged a conspiracy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as a portrait of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, positioned behind the Speaker’s seat was replaced with that of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on the first day of the Winter Session.
The opposition alleged a ‘conspiracy’ orchestrated by the BJP to alter history. They stated that they would address this issue in the House, expressing approval for installing Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s portrait but insisted that Nehru’s portrait should not have been removed.
Ajay Singh, a senior Congress leader and MLA from Churhat, highlighted, “Nehru was a freedom fighter, and his contribution towards India can’t be ignored like that.”
Addressing the controversy, MP Legislative Assembly principal secretary AP Singh clarified that Nehru’s portrait was replaced due to its deteriorated condition.

“The posters were in bad shape, so the previous Speaker, Girish Gautam, had decided in July this year to replace them. It was his decision to put a poster of the Father of the Indian Constitution, B.R. Ambedkar, in the House,” he said.
The Winter Session, spanning four days, began almost a week after the inauguration of a new BJP government led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
During the session on Monday, CM Mohan Yadav, Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar, deputy chief ministers Jagdish Devda and Rajendra Shukla, former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with BJP representatives Narendra Singh Tomar, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Prahlad Patel, and Jayant Maliya, and Congress representative Ajay Singh, all took their oaths as MLAs of the 16th Assembly..
